AD Search Goes On

In-coming East Carolina chancellor Dr. Steve Ballard cancelled a scheduled telephone conference call with the school's Board of Trustees and said he is keeping the search for a new athletics director open.

Possibly in reaction to strong sentiments expressed by Pirate fans via e-mail, and phone calls, Ballard has decided to postpone his plan of announcing a successor to Mike Hamrick. Speculation by many indicated that Ballard was prepared to name former ECU athletic director Dave Hart's son Rick Hart as the new AD. Hart is currently an assistant athletic director in charge of marketing and licensing at Oklahoma.

Rick Hart has been on the Oklahoma staff since 1999. A graduate of the University of North Carolina in 1994, he worked with ticket operations there until accepting the OU job. In a statement released by the ECU News Bureau, Ballard said he is keeping the search open while he continues to gather input on the selection from members of the East Carolina University family.

Hart was one of a number of applicants interviewed by the school's AD search committee, but was not one of those forwarded to Ballard. Those three were Nick Floyd, currently the interim AD for the school; Jeff Barber, Associate Athletic Director for the Gamecock Club at South Carolina; and Randall Spetman, former AD at the Air Force Academy.

Floyd asked that his name be withdrawn from consideration on Friday.
