Big Numbers Await in Mobile?

East Carolina and Marshall both have a big and effective offensive force in David Garrard and Byron Leftwich respectively. Matched up against equally shaky defenses should result in a high-scoring affair in Mobile.

Garrard, a 6-1 249 lb. senior has broken a multitude of ECU passing records over a three-year stretch. Garrard passed for 2,247 yards and 13 touchdowns during the 2001 regular season. The Pirates averaged 37 points a game. In a much more pass oriented offense, Leftwich, a 6-6 240 pounder has amassed 4,132 yards and 38 touchdowns in leading the Thundering Herd to 10-2 record this year. Marshall averaged 38 points a game. In total team offense, ECU finished 35th nationally at 416 yards per game. Marshall ranked third nationally, averaging a whopping 505 total offensive yards per game. Defensively, ECU gave up big yardage in the air (261 yards per game) leading to a final ranking in that category of 101st nationally. Overall, the Pirates' defense ranked 82nd nationally. Finishing even farther down the list in overall defense was Marshall at 87th. The Herd gave up an average of 416 total yards a game to ECU's 409. I think it's safe to say the 2001 GMAC Bowl will not be a defensive struggle.
