GMAC Bowl Notes 12/14/01

Ticket sales for next week's GMAC Bowl are not as strong as had been predicted, especially among Marshall fans. According to Marshall athletic director Lance West reported sales of only 5000 to Herd fans.

Frustration with ticket delivery procedures may be a culprit in the situation. ECU decided not to mail any tickets , but rather required fans to pick them up in person, either in Greenville or at the stadium on gameday. Many Pirate fans were frustrated with that decision. Thus far, East Carolina has sold only 3,000 tickets. Local sales in Mobile have been strong according to GMAC Bowl President Jerry Silverstein.

Both teams are scheduled to arrive in Mobile Friday, with East Carolina coming in at 1 p.m. and Marshall arriving at 5 p.m.

Editor's Note

The Mississippi Connection

In an earlier article, I took the Biloxi area to task for not supporting Mobile and the GMAC Bowl since the casinos and resorts on Mississippi's Gulf Coast benefit directly.

Since that piece ran, I have been informed that casinos in Biloxi have indeed offered their financial support to the Bowl in the past only to have their attempts rebuffed. I stand corrected.
