Following his team's 59-7 shellacking at the hands of Louisville on Saturday, East Carolina football coach felt compelled to throw in a spiritual twist to the Pirate's failure.
Said Thompson, "As long as you keep trying, you're not failures, that's the only thing you can say. You put numbers and records on it, but that doesn't talk about your soul or what kind of man you are." Sorry, but what we're talking about here is the reality of big time college athletics, not a Sunday school lesson. In big time college athletics the quality of your soul means little, numbers do. The numbers say that ECU football is a failure.
Only one day into his tenure as the new athletic director at East Carolina, Terry Holland would be forgiven if he found himself seriously questioning his decision to take over the helm of a department whose flagship product was in such a dismal state.
There may be
hard decisions down the road regarding ECU's football future, but not this year. Despite the numerous calls for his dismissal, John Thompson is ECU's football coach, this year and next. As to the state of his soul, I can only speculate.
