Monday's Notes

The John Thompson era of ECU Football came to an excruciating end on a gray, and grim Saturday afternoon in Charlotte.

A 52-14 pummeling by NC State put the finishing touches on Thompson's 3-20 run in Greenville. ECU's only victories in Thompson's tenure were against Army (twice) and Tulane.

It's too early to determine exactly how long it will take for the program to regain a semblance to its former self, if ever. Even if athletic director Terry Holland lures a big-name coach to Greenville, the odds are stacked against him – unless ECU manages a spot in a BCS conference. Maybe we'll get a hint of things on Tuesday at the Looming press conference.

Remember when

Remember when a State-ECU football game had intensity, at least from one side of the fence? Considering the rivalry's testy past, Saturday's 52-14 romp by NC State was maybe the most ho-hum football game I have ever attended. All in all it just seemed like everyone, players included, were just going through the motions of finishing the year. The State fans on hand didn't seem to take any great pleasure in their team's crushing victory over the hapless Pirates, and of course ECU fans haven't had anything to cheer about in over three years.
