Grizzard Closing in on Pirate Offer?

Inside ECU Sports has the latest on safety Josh Grizzard and his interest in East Carolina.

Athlete Josh Grizzard was in Greenville recently for the East Carolina spring game.

There is a good chance the junior from East Wake High School in Wendell, N.C. will see his first offer in the near future – but from who?

"I think East Carolina or Duke will be the first school to offer," said Grizzard, a versatile 6-3, 190-pound prospect. "I had a great time at ECU not long ago. It was good to see them in action. People were really excited about the season. I talked to Coach Roggeman, Coach Fitch and Coach Holtz. They are all great guys and we got along really well. I like what they're trying to do.

"The ECU coaches told me they want me to come back to their camp. I get the impression that if I perform well there, they will offer me. Duke sounds like they're about ready to offer too."

Grizzard runs the 40-yard dash in 4.6 seconds and has the ability to play multiple positions at the next level.

"Most schools are just trying to bring me in as an athlete," he said. "I have the ability to play safety, quarterback or maybe even something else. This past year I was an all-conference safety for East Wake, but the way it's looking now I'm going to be strictly a quarterback next year."

Last year Grizzard recorded 95 tackles and six interceptions on defense. Offensively he accounted for 450 yards and three touchdowns.

"My time as a quarterback has really helped me on defense a lot," said Grizzard. "I was able to pick off a few balls last year because I was thinking like a quarterback. I had a feel for where the play was going and how it was going to develop."

In addition to East Carolina and Duke, Grizzard is looking at several other schools.

"I've been hearing from schools like NC State, Virginia Tech and Wake Forest in the ACC. Yale and Princeton are recruiting me too. The ACC schools would offer me a good education and good competition on the field, and the Ivy League schools just have great academics. There are positives about all the schools I've heard from. East Carolina is definitely up there near the top of my list, though."

Grizzard plans on camping at ECU, Duke, Virginia Tech and Wake Forest. He may add or subtract from that list later.
