LB Demetrius Hartsfield from Southeast Raleigh (NC) High School has been a virtual unknown on the recruiting trail for the class of 2008. However, after a solid showing recently at the Shrine Bowl combine held at Greene Central High School, expect to hear more about this standout ‘backer in the coming days.
After tallying 128 tackles, 26 tackles for loss and 14 sacks as a junior, Hartsfield showed he will be a definite prospect to watch after measuring in at 6-2, 208 pounds and running a 4.79-second 40-yard dash this past weekend. He also had an impressive 32.6-inch vertical jump and 23 reps of 185 pounds on the bench press.
At least one school has indicated they may be very close to offering.
"I think Purdue is close to offering," said Hartsfield. "I've been talking to their linebacker coach a lot Him and my coach, they played together. They talked and looked at my film. They're going to look at my grades and then see about offering a scholarship."
In addition to Purdue, Hartsfield indicated he's also receiving interest from East Carolina, Georgia, UNC and NC State.
Some East Carolina connections on the Southeast Raleigh coaching staff have Hartsfield squarely on the Pirate's radar.
"East Carolina, most of my coaches came from there. So they're really close with them. Coach Roggeman, the LB coach at ECU has been interested in me since last year. He came by last week and looked at me, got my film and he told my coach he really liked me. He said they'd really like to get me out there."
Georgia currently holds a slight lead for Hartsfield with East Carolina, UNC and NC State solidly in the chase. He plans to camp at Vanderbilt, Georgia, UNC and East Carolina over the summer.
