Name: Matt Thompson
Hometown: Mebane, North Carolina
High School: Eastern Alamance High School
NOTES: A ferocious hitter, Thompson was a two-year starter and four-year letterman at Eastern Alamance High School. An all-conference, all-area, all-region, and Shrine Bowl selection, Thompson tallied 82 tackles in 2006.
The 6-foot-2, 195-pound safety committed to East Carolina fairly early in the process, and he has a chance to be an impact performer. With his size and speed, Thompson could project as a strong safety or outside linebacker.
SCOUTING REPORT: "Football can be a game of finesse for some players. However, that's not the case for Matt Thompson from Eastern Alamance High School. Thompson is a rock solid prospect who thrives on punishing any offensive player that dares to come into his area. The rising senior makes no effort to avoid contact and, in fact, seems to relish the chance to blow up a ball carrier or would-be receiver. He shows solid cover skills as a safety in high school and has great timing when breaking on the ball. Thompson moves well, but his build and speed will likely result in many colleges looking at him as linebacker prospect on the next level." -- Football Recruiting Analyst Steve Williams
THOMPSON QUOTE: "I'm a hard hitter. I get the job done. I just like to hit. That about sums it up."
COACH QUOTE: "Matt is a hard-nosed kid. He has a nose for the football. Sometimes he would rather have contact than make a play on the ball. He just likes to hit. We play him at safety, but I think he will be an outside linebacker on the next level because of how physical he is." -- Eastern Alamance head coach John Kirby
