Running back Darius Spencer figures to be one of the top commitments in East Carolina's Class of 2008. He recently spoke about his decision.

"I'm committed to East Carolina," said Spencer, who at 5-9 and 174-pounds runs the 40-yard dash in 4.37 seconds. "I committed on Friday. I called Coach Kirkpatrick and told him the news. He was pretty excited and so am I. I feel like I'm pretty solid to ECU too."

Last year at A. C. Reynolds High School in Asheville, NC, Spencer had 1,300 rushing yards with 18 touchdowns en route to all-conference honors. His speed should be a major asset for the Pirates in the years to come.

"My best asset is my speed," he said. "Not many people can run with me in the open field. Also, I have great cutback ability and can change directions easily. My vision is good too."

Spencer held offers from North Carolina, NC State and South Carolina, but decided ECU was the school for him.

"There were a lot of reasons, but I just felt really comfortable with them. Coach Kirkpatrick is a great coach and a great recruiter, and he did a great job convincing me to go to ECU. I feel good about what they're doing. I like the guys on the team and I like the atmosphere around the program. The academics at the school are going to be really good for me."

Spencer plans on camping at East Carolina on June 16. He is not sure if he will take any official visits, but did say he believed his decision was final.

COACH QUOTE: "I think Darius is more of a running back, and you'll see that on the tape. He can really run with the football. If he works hard, I think by his sophomore year he'll be close to 200 pounds.

"You'll see. With his speed at 4.35 and his size, he can carry it for us and I think he could be a back on that level." -- Asheville (NC) A.C. Reynolds Assistant Coach Larry Brow

SCOUTING REPORT: "Some players post great combine numbers but that talent never seems to translate proportionally to the football field. Darius Spencer isn't one of those players. If anything, he appears to be even faster.

"What is most impressive are the number of long runs where he runs through an entire defense without ever being touched. He creates almost impossible pursuit angles for opposing defenses due to his incredible burst and top end speed.

"Spencer has the size to certainly play running back on the next level but his speed and athleticism make him a candidate to star at almost every position where speed is a prerequisite. On film, he is one of the most impressive players in North Carolina." --Recruiting Analyst Steve Williams
