Monday's Notes

East Carolina running back Art Brown's upbeat post-game comments following the Pirates 44-20 loss to Louisville are quoted extensively in today's Greenville Daily Reflector.

Art said, "In this conference you can lose one game. But if you lose two games we're not going to win the conference championship. So we have to step up, and basically we have to win out." Art continues by saying, "There are a lot of down faces. We're disappointed because we practiced hard. But we'll bounce back like any good team."

It is indeed a good thing for football players to be upbeat, but East Carolina's Art Brown may want to take a course in reality. The reality is this year's ECU football team's record is 2-5 and they are not good. Any talk of a conference championship for the Pirates only serves to reinforce the sorry state of affairs of Conference USA football.

To his credit, Brown did discount the often-used excuse for this year's 2-5 record, youth, "You have six games under your belt now. You have to come out and you have got to execute and make plays. We didn't do that (Saturday)."

With five games remaining in a 12-game schedule, ECU can still accomplish a winning season, but I wouldn't count on it. The five foes include TCU (6-1) and Southern Mississippi (5-2), a team ECU can't beat in a good year.
