Pirates Show Heart in Comeback Win

East Carolina kept its slim postseason hopes alive with an improbable 54-48 triple overtime win over the Houston Cougars.

After overcoming a 17 point fourth quarter deficit the ECU Pirates (3-5, 3-1 C-USA) actually had an opportunity to beat the Houston Cougars (4-5, 2-4 C-USA) in regulation but a 35 yard Kevin Miller field goal attempt with only 5 seconds remaining was off the mark.

In the third overtime a Houston fumble was recovered by the ECU defense and on the successive Pirate possession fullback Art Brown scampered 25 yards to paydirt to seal the victory. Brown finished the afternoon with 132 yards and 4 touchdowns.

Pirate quarterback Paul Troth had what was probably his best game, throwing for 369 yards (22 of 33) and 3 touchdowns. Desmond Robinson also had a good appearance completing three passes on four attmpts for 71 yards. The Pirates offense racked up a total of 598 yards.

Down 34-17 at the 12:50 mark in the fourth quarter ECU scored three times, a 16 yard Art Brown TD run, a Kevin Miller field goal and a one yard touchdown plunge by Brown.
