The Trojans are coming off a thrilling shootout at Tennessee where they led the Volunteers 48-41, after a spectacular one-handed catch by sophomore receiver Eric Thomas for a 67-yard touchdown. The Trojans racked up 721 total yards of offense against Tennessee but were unable to hold off the Vols, as they scored 14 unanswered points within the last three minutes for a 55-48 victory.
Troy has successfully used two junior quarterbacks in its spread offense with Corey Robinson leading the pair completing 184 for 290 pass attempts for 2,199 yards and 9 touchdowns. Unlike Deon Anthony, who has rushed for 312 rushing yards and 4 touchdowns, Robinson is not a big threat to run with a negative rushing total and one score. Anthony averages 70.6 passing yards per game and leads the pair in accuracy, with 7 touchdown passes and one interception--Robinson has thrown 8 picks.
Chip Reeves is one of the most dangerous down field threats in the country and leads the Sun Belt with 10 catches of 30 yards or more. Reeves is also fifth in the country with four catches for 50 yards or more. In nine games the senior receiver has 47 receptions for 804 yards receiving and 5 scores.
Junior receiver Eric Thomas led the conference with nine touchdowns receptions in 2011. Thomas is just about on pace to match that with six touchdowns through nine games.
Sophomore receiver Chandler Worthy is third on the team with 35 receptions for 415 yards and a touchdown. Worthy also returns kicks for the Trojans averaging 22.8 yards per return. Senior Jaquon Robinson averages 32.7 receiving yards per game and adds three touchdowns.
Running back Shawn Southward is also a threat to catch out of the back field, averaging 25.9 yards receiving per game. The senior adds 793 yards rushing on 153 rushing attempts and nine scores. The Trojans also get receiver Justin Albert involved in the running game. In nine games Albert has 59 carries for 267 yards rushing and two scores. Albert also returns punts for Trojans averaging 7.3 yards per return, with a long return of 54 yards.
The Trojan offensive front was excellent against the Vols and did not allow a sack. Senior center Kyle Wilborn leads the team with 79 knockdowns and one sack allowed. Troy has a very strong left side with Jarred Fleming handling left tackle and Cody Woodiel at guard. Fleming leads the starters with an 87.1 percent blocking grade.
Troy's has the 90th ranked total defense (434.78 ypg) and 81st ranked scoring defense, allowing 30 points per game. The Trojans are holding opponents to 34 percent on third downs and 168.4 rushing yards per game.
Troy runs a 3-4 defense centered around middle linebacker Brannon Bryan who is second on the team with 56 tackles The senior adds a tackle for a loss, an interception and a pair of quarterback hurries.
Strong side linebacker Kanorris Davis led the team in tackles against South Alabama (11) and Mississippi State (10). Davis is third on the team with 52 tackles, including 3 for a loss of 10 yards.
At weakside linebacker, Dimitri Miles has performed well after an excellent true freshman season with 23 tackles and a pick. The sophomore has tallied 41 tackles, including 2 for a loss, with a sack, and a pair of quarterback hurries.
Redshirt freshman Tyler Roberts has brought the pressure at bandit linebacker position with 26 tackles including 5 for a loss, and 2 sacks.
Senior safety Brynden Trawick is on pace to hold on to his tackling title with 68 tackles, 4½, an interception, with four passes defended. Opposite Trawick, Chris Pickett has turned up the heat in the second half of the season--the junior safety forced fumbles in three consecutive games and led the team in tackles in the two games prior to the Tennessee matchup.
Bryan Willis and Zach Miller man the cornerback positions with Willis leading the team with seven passes defended and an interception in seven games. Miller leads the pair with 25 tackles, with 3 passes defended, and two forced fumbles.
The Trojan defensive line is anchored by senior defensive end Tony Davis who leads the team in tackles for a loss (6½) and sacks (3).
Junior defensive tackles Shermane Teart and Derrek Upshaw combine for 4½ tackles for a loss and a sack. Upshaw blocked a field goal in Troy's 31-10 victory over South Alabama. Senior defensive tackle Kyle Lucas leads the defensive tackles with 15 tackles, including 2 for a loss.
Junior place kicker Will Scott is enjoying an excellent season hitting 11 of 15 field goal attempts with a season long of 52 yards against Florida Atlantic. Scott also handles punts of the Trojans with a season long of 57 yards while pinning opponents inside their 20-yard line 13 times.
Troy head coach Larry Blakeney has his team playing hard with a 93-17-1 record at home in his tenure. After a sub par performance against Florida Atlantic, the Mids will again be tested against a talented passing attack against a team fighting for bowl eligibility. A win against the Trojans would guarantee a winning record for Navy after a 2011 season without a bowl.
