Important InfoAtlantic Sun Tournament Semifinals No. 2 FGCU (22-9, 11-3) vs. No. 3 USC Upstate (22-10, 8-6) Alico Arena (Fort Myers, Fla.) | 7:00 p.m ET ESPN3 | Live Stats
-With 2 assists on Thursday, Brett Comer will have 833 in his career and break into the top 25 of all time NCAA career assist leaders.
PreviewFGCU has had USC Upstate's number as of late, but there is no doubt that the Eagles will need one of their best efforts of the season to take down Ty Greene and the Spartans.
"Since it is the tournament, I'm expecting everyone to give it their best punch. It's win or go home. They're gonna come out with everything they've got," senior Brett Comer said. "Ty Greene is a great scorer, we have to contain him as best we can."
In the two meetings this season, Greene scored a combined 57 points, but the Eagles walked out with two wins. A big reason for that was FGCU's focus on keeping other players in check.
"One thing that happened last game...no one else jumped up and had a career night. He's gonna get a certain amount of points, we hope to keep him under his average," head coach Joe Dooley said. "But we haven't allowed a guy averaging 8 [points] to get 15 [points]. We held Fred Miller to his average...you're hoping to control some of the other guys that aren't usually focal points of the offense."
Coming off the quarterfinals victory over Jacksonville - ending a two game losing streak, the Eagles are optimistic heading into the matchup against the Spartans.
"We didn't really get down on ourselves [after dropping two games]," senior Jamail Jones said. "We felt pretty good, practice had good energy. We feel good going into the game, we just gotta prepare for them because it's always a battle with Upstate...we just have to stick to what we do. Obviously it's going to be a fistfight."
And fistfight might be an understatement. Ty Greene and Fred Miller up against Bernard Thompson, Brett Comer and Jamail Jones in the back court on Thursday night, all battling to keep their college basketball careers alive for at least one more game.
