Beverly, Mass. product Nick Cross has committed to the FGCU men's basketball team as a walk-on for 2016-17, he informed the FGCU Eagles Nest recently. The news was first reported by The Salem News.
Originally a class of 2014 prospect from Beverly HS, Cross was hearing from a number of D2 and D3 schools out of high school before deciding to take a post-grad year at West Oaks.
"Out of there [West Oaks], I had a couple opportunities for some walk on spots," Cross said. "I talked to an assistant coach at Missouri. I came down and visited Florida Gulf Coast too."
The 6-foot-4 guard then headed to Marshalltown CC (Iowa) for the 2015-16 season. As a Tiger, Cross averaged 10 points a game on 42.5% shooting from the floor and 37.9% from beyond the arc. He dropped a season-high 26 points on Dec. 12 en route to being named the ICCAC Player of the Week.
The Mass. native knew FGCU was the place for him ever since his visit to #DunkCity during his post-grad days, but it wasn't made official until recently.
"I just didn’t get into the school otherwise I would have already been down there," Cross said. "...Once I got into the school at FGCU, I was like 'I’m all in.'"
Cross is headed to Fort Myers on June 18th to get situated. It's been a long and winding road for the sharpshooting guard, but one that allows him to bring more to the table.
"Just the competition," Cross said of what sets himself apart. "At Marshalltown, there were some pretty good players we played against - guys who went to Wisconsin and Indiana - so I think it was some good competition. I was able to pick up more there in the faster pace."
As for what Eagle fans should expect from him, one thing in particular stands out.
“I would say I definitely can shoot the ball - that’s definitely my strength," Cross said.
