FGCU defeated UT-Arlington, 85-72, in its home opener on Wednesday night. Brandon Goodwin and Zach Johnson paced the Eagles with 24 points a piece while Demetris Morant added 10 points and 8 rebounds.
There's two halves for a reason
Heading into the break, Florida Gulf Coast trailed UT-Arlington by 13 points after shooting just 1/12 from three and committing 8 turnovers. Apparently Joe Dooley gave a great halftime speech because FGCU came out firing in the 2nd half. Brandon Goodwin poured in 9 points in the first five minutes of the half en route to 24 points on the night. The Eagles shot 7/8 from beyond the arc in the 2nd half and outscored UTA by 26.
Zach Johnson was scorching hot
The redshirt sophomore guard isn't known as a three point specialist by any means but he certainly looked like one on Wednesday. He ended the night 4/8 from long-range and poured in three from downtown - including a four point play that blew the roof off of Alico Arena - during a three minute stretch midway through the second half. Everything he tossed up seemed to go in. It was just one of those nights.
Still no Marc-Eddy Norelia
FGCU, without its leading scorer from a year ago, beat the Sun Belt favorite and No. 5 ranked mid-major team (College Insider). That's certainly an encouraging sign for the team heading forward. According to Dana Caldwell of the Naples Daily News, Norelia was not in the building due to a family matter. If he is able to return this weekend, the Eagles could have the potential to pull of a stunner against Baylor, who just knocked off No. 5 Oregon, or No. 13 Michigan State.
