FGCU ends drought in Jacksonville

The Eagles pulled away from the Dolphins to win their fifth straight.

Traveling North to battle Jacksonville has posed problems for Florida Gulf Coast in years past. The Eagles haven't walked away from JU with a win since 2013.

That changed on Saturday night as FGCU withstood a huge run to defeat Jacksonville, 67-57, and stay atop first place in the Atlantic Sun.

Zach Johnson got things started for the Eagles, scoring 8 of their first 23 points, to go up double digits. Kevin Mickle also quietly put together a great game, getting deflections and rebounds on the defensive end and crashing the offensive glass.

It looked as if FGCU was pulling away for good and they walked into halftime with a 12 point lead.

The Dolphins had other ideas, as they stormed back to take a 43-42 lead six minutes into the second half. They took advantage of a stagnant FGCU offense and grabbed all the momentum.

But Brandon Goodwin, as he's done so many times this year, came up with some timely baskets down the stretch to help the Eagles regain the lead and pull away to a double digit victory. Goodwin stuffed the stat sheet with 24 points, 10 rebounds, and 4 assists.

FGCU won its fifth straight to move to 19-6 (8-1) and hold onto first place in the A-Sun. Next up, the Eagles will host second-place Lipscomb (15-11, 7-2) on Thursday night. A win for the Eagles would go a long way in securing the top seed in the conference tournament.
