College Park, MD - No. 1 Florida State (43-8-1, 15-5 ACC) put up five runs in the top of the first inning and scored in each of the next four innings to easily defeat Maryland (19-31, 6-16 ACC) by a final of 14-6 Saturday afternoon at Shipley Field. Bryan Zech and Matt Sauls, the No. 8 and No. 9 hitters in the order, combined for seven hits and six RBI to lead the 16-hit Seminole attack. FSU had a season-high 21 hits in last night's 15-4 victory over the Terps.
FSU jumped out to an early lead with five runs in the top of the first. Stephen Drew led off with a walk, Tony McQuade walked and Jerrod Brown reached on an error to load the bases. Blake Balkcom then knocked in two with a single to right. Aaron Cheesman made it 3-0 when he scored Brown from third on a suicide squeeze. Chris Hart was hit by a pitch and Bryan Zech cleared the bases with a two-run triple to right.
The two teams exchanged solo home runs in the bottom of the first and top of the second. Mike Costantino hit Matt Lynch's first pitch of the game over the fence in right to make it 5-1. McQuade hit his 10th homer of the year for the Seminoles in the second to push the FSU lead back to five.
In the top of the third inning, Balkcom singled and moved to second on a groundout before coming around to score on a Maryland fielding error.
Ray Gemmill's three-run homer to center with two outs in the bottom of the third brought the Terrapins to within three at 7-4.
The Seminoles scored two more runs in the fourth to make it 9-4. Matt Sauls led off the inning with a double off the wall in center and Drew picked up the RBI with a double to left. With the bases loaded and one away, Balkcom knocked in his third run of the game with a groundout.
FSU scored in its fifth straight inning when Zech doubled, stole third and scored on Sauls' single up the middle.
After UM scored a single run in the bottom of the sixth, the Tribe put up three more in the top of the seventh. Aaron Cheesman got things going with a double down the third base line and Zech followed with an RBI-single up the middle. Sauls ripped his fourth home run of the year over the fence in left to make it 13-5.
Maryland added a run in the seventh and FSU did the same in the eighth for the 14-6 final.
Florida State and Maryland complete the series Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
