Did FSU Offer South Florida Star?

North Lauderdale Academy standout linebacker Vernon Smith went from being little known to being considered by some as the top linebacker in Florida. Right now the 6-foot-1, 228-pound head-hunter is sitting with 25 scholarship offers. Florida State recruiting coordinator John Lilly dropped by the school Thursday to take a closer look. Did the Noles join the Vernon Smith Sweepstakes?

"Every coach that has been here has offered him," North Lauderdale Academy head football coach Harold Pearson said. "Early in the spring, I overnighted Oklahoma his highlight tape. I sent them the tape on Monday. By Thursday of that week Vernon received from Fed Ex a scholarship offer from them."

The buzz going around Florida is that Smith might be as good as Carol City's Willie Williams and Lake Mary's Keith Rivers. So far big-time schools like Florida, Miami, Oklahoma, Tennessee, and Alabama have offered him.

What about the Noles? Did they finally pull the trigger?

"Coach Lilly stopped by and he got to watch some film," Coach Pearson said. "I think he liked it but he didn't offer."

In the writer opinion, it's probably only a matter of time before Florida State offers. Practice got rained out today and the Noles might want to watch him play live before Smith receives an offer.
