Florida State (49-9-1) staved off elimination with a 2-0 win over the Virginia Cavaliers (29-25) on Saturday morning in the ACC Baseball Tournament in Salem, VA. Daniel Davidson (9-0) picked up the win and Daniel Hodges earned his twelfth save of the year in the low scoring contest.
Davidson went 7.2 innings, and allowed only three hits and one walk while striking out seven batters. At one point in the game, Davidson had retired eighteen batters in a row. Kevin Lynch faced one batter in the eighth inning, and Hodges got the final four outs of the game to preserve the win.
Florida State's first run came in the bottom of the third inning when Stephen Drew singled up the middle, moved to second on a wild pitch, to third on a groundout by Tony McQuade, and scored on a single to left by Tony Richie.
The second run for the Noles scored in the sixth frame when Blake Balkcom led off with a double to left, moved to third on a sacrifice bunt, and scored on a sacrifice fly by Chris Hart. With that double, Balkcom extended his hitting streak to fourteen games.
The Noles improved to 49-9-1 on the season while Virginia most likely ended their season at 29-25. FSU must now wait until the conclusion of the 5:00 game between North Carolina and North Carolina State to find out when they play again. If the Wolfpack win, the Seminoles will face them tonight at around 8:30 pm. If they lose, the game will be at 10:00 am on Sunday morning.
