Former Florida State coach Bobby Bowden earned a reputation as a strong closer on the recruiting trail, oftentimes waiting until the 11th hour to reveal to the world that he'd just pulled in another batch of young studs.
Current ringmaster Jimbo Fisher, on the other hand, tends to get out to a quick start, but perhaps he's taking a page out of Bowden's book with less than two weeks to go before National Signing Day, which is Feb. 1.
Ricardo Louis, a 6-2, 200-pound athlete from Miami Beach (FL) Senior High School, flipped his commitment Friday from Auburn to the Seminoles. Although he spent the majority of his prep career playing quarterback, he'll be catching passes instead of throwing them in college because he projects best as a receiver. Scout.com currently classifies Louis as a four-star recruit and the No. 29 wideout in the country.
According to Scout.com national recruiting analyst Chad Simmons, the fact that the 'Noles stole Louis from an SEC powerhouse little more than one year removed from a national championship is newsworthy in itself.
"This is a big gain for FSU and a big loss for Auburn," said Simmons. "Louis has so much potential if he puts everything together. He has the frame that is college-ready today, and he has excellent straight-line speed. Louis just adds to Florida State's depth at wide receiver, and he gives them one more playmaker. He can be used in multiple ways, and the 'Noles just snuck in there at the last minute and grabbed him away from Auburn."
Louis' story reads a lot like that of receiver Christian Green, who arrived in Tallahassee as a high school QB, redshirted in 2010 to learn his new position and then flashed big-time ability this past season as a freshman with 26 catches for 450 yards.
