St. Bonaventure forward Andrew Nicholson was unstoppable in the first half. Florida State's defense was up to his considerable challenge in the second half.
Holding the St. Bonaventure star scoreless for a 15-minute, 45-second stretch, the third-seeded Seminoles overcame an eight-point deficit with 16:48 remaining and earned a 66-63 victory Friday in the NCAA Tournament East Region second round at Bridgestone Arena.
Bernard James scored 19 points and grabbed nine rebounds for Florida State (25-9), which will play No. 6 seed Cincinnati on Sunday. Okaro White drilled a 3-pointer with 1:01 left -- and one second on the shot clock -- that gave the Seminoles a 63-57 lead.
White's biggest play, though, might have been when he tapped the rebound of a missed one-and-one by teammate Deividas Dulkys to Luke Loucks with 25.2 seconds left and Florida State clinging to a two-point lead.
"When he uses his athleticism like that," Loucks said of White, "it lifts us up as a team."
Still, the Bonnies had a chance to force overtime after Loucks missed a free throw with 22.4 seconds left that would have put Florida State ahead by four points. But after the Seminoles gave a foul with 14 ticks on the clock, St. Bonaventure never got off an attempt at a 3-pointer.
Instead, Da'Quan Cook shot a fadeaway jumper from the lane that missed, then grabbed the rebound and tried to stick it back in rather than pass to a teammate behind the arc. Cook's shot was rejected by James and Florida State rebounded, running out the clock.
White comes up big down the stretch
