Departing Senior class played a key role in FSU turnaround
Florida State's final regular season home game marks the last time to recognize the senior class for their contributions. The group of 25 has been a key part of a transformation over their careers. The fifth-year seniors - Everett Dawkins, E.J. Manuel, Moses McCray, Toshmon Stevens, and Vince Williams - signed on in Feb. 2008as the program was coming off its second consecutive 7-6 season under Bobby Bowden. Though they endured a 7-6 campaign in 2009 - Bowden's final season - they have also been party to the programs resurgence under Jimbo Fisher.
With still a lot left to accomplish, the class already has claim to two 10-win seasons, and two nine-win seasons. The fifth year 'Noles enter today's game against rival Florida with a 45-19 record, four consecutive bowl victories, and will make their second ACC Championship game appearance next week against Georgia Tech. The four-year record for the group - 36-15 and counting - is the best four-year record for a group since 2003 (38-14).
In all, 25 seniors will be recognized today including 16 scholarship players. In addition to the four-year guys who have spent their entire career at FSU, there are also four transfers - Tank Carradine, Dax Dellenbach, Amp McCloud, and Debrale Smiley. Eight of the seniors have already completed undergraduate degrees with several more to follow by the end of the semester.
'Noles right at home in top-10 rivalry meetings
If you choose to put stock in previous results it should be noted that Florida State has done quite well against rival Florida at Doak Campbell Stadium when both teams are ranked the AP Top 10, as they are today. This is the first time since 2000 that both teams have been in the AP Top 10 for this annual showdown. The Gators may hold a 21-11-1 record in Tallahassee, but the Seminoles are 5-0-1 inside the friendly confines of Doak in Top 10 match-ups between the teams, including 2-0-1 as the lower ranked team.
Inside the series numbers
Florida State is seeking its third consecutive victory over Florida in the 57th meeting between the schools, something it has done only three timers previously. The 'Noles last won three in a row against the Gators was 1998-2000. FSU also has a pair of four-game winning streaks, 1987-1990 and 1977-1980.
The Seminoles have limited the Gators to seven points in each of the last two meetings; something they had previously not done since 1963 and 1964. In 56 previous match-ups, Florida State has never held Florida to fewer than 10 points in three consecutive games.
Last year in Gainesville ended a 26-year streak of at least one team being ranked the top-25 at the time of the game.
Florida State is 10-9-1 in games where both schools are ranked
Hunting victory No. 11
With a 10-1 record entering today's game, Florida State can reach 11 wins for just the 12th time in program history and the first time since 2000. The 'Noles can reach 11 wins in the regular season for just the seventh time joining the 1979, 1993, 1996, 1998, 1999, and 2000 squads. The other five Seminoles teams needed a bowl victory to record an 11th win.
