By playing the Vandals the week before traveling to Gainesville, the Seminoles have finally given themselves a little extra time to prepare for the Gators and get healthy – a tactic that UF has practiced for quite some time. The Gators play Georgia Southern the week before hosting FSU next season.
However this is not the first time FSU has done so. In 2006, FSU played Western Michigan the week before defeating the Gators 28-20.
Perhaps equally important is now FSU has avoided playing two Division 1-AA opponents, something that hurt the ‘Noles all season long in both the computer rankings and the human polls.
The opening comes from a couple of reasons. One is the fact that West Virginia backed out of a home and home series that would have had FSU traveling to play the Mountaineers in 2013. The other contributing factor is the ACC was slated to play a nine-game conference schedule before reverting back to eight games this past September.
This will be the first meeting between the two schools. Idaho will be in its first season under newly hired head coach Paul Petrino.
