Charles Kelly Joins the FSU Staff

Charles Kelly looks to be the newest member of the Florida State coaching staff. Here's a profile on Charles Kelly.

It's long been mentioned that Greg Hudson's days at Florida State were numbered. On Monday that came to fruition as Hudson agreed to become the defensive coordinator at Purdue for newly hired head coach Darrell Hazell.

Almost as soon as the news came out, it was announced that Jimbo Fisher would name Georgia Tech's interim defensive coordinator, Charles Kelly, to replace Hudson as the Seminoles linebacker's coach as well as the new special teams coordinator.

Charles Kelly has spent seven seasons coaching at Georgia Tech, with five of those spent as the secondary coach under Paul Johnson. After coaching cornerbacks in 2008 and 2009, Kelly took over the entire secondary in 2010. As you will see, there is not a position on the field that Kelly is not accustomed to; you name it, he's coached it.

Along with coaching the secondary, Kelly, who was also a defensive coordinator at three different schools, has served as the Yellow Jackets special teams coordinator. Kelly was instrumental in making GT into one of the nation's best special teams units in 2007. The unit went from 119th in the country in kick return defense in 2006 to second in 2007.

This season when Al Groh was fired as the defensive coordinator, Kelly did a heck of a job stepping in and turning that unit around. On average, the Jackets' defense allowed nearly 10 points less under Kelly and in its final two games held Florida State to 21 points, and USC to just 7.

Kelly was thought to be a likely candidate to remain in that role as defensive coordinator, but a report last night claims that Kelly never really put his name in the discussion and wanted a change of scenery.

Before coaching at Georgia Tech, Kelly spent time at Nicholls St. as the defensive backs coach, Eufala High School as the defensive coordinator and linebackers coach, and a five-year stop at Jacksonville State where he was the defensive coordinator. While at Jacksonville St., Kelly also coached running backs, quarterbacks, receivers and even spent time as the offensive coordinator.

Before coaching at Jacksonville St., Kelly played defensive back at Auburn under head coach Pat Dye. He also did his graduate assistant work alongside Jimbo Fisher at Aubrun. Kelly is highly regarded amongst his peers.
