McGee Named to Johnny Bench Award Watch List

The Seminole catcher is hitting .295 with a perfect fielding percentage in 15 games this year.

Florida State's Stephen McGee is one of 48 catchers named to the 2013 Johnny Bench Award Watch List as announced by the Greater Wichita Area Sports Commission on Monday, March 11.

McGee has started all 15 games, including 14 from behind the plate, in directing the Seminoles to a 15-0 start for just the third time in school history. The junior catcher has played a key role in guiding the Seminole pitching staff that currently leads the ACC with a team ERA of 1.73 through the fourth week of the season.

The Port St. Lucie, Fla., native has posted a perfect fielding percentage in 115 chances from behind the plate as he has caught 109 of a possible 135 innings in 2013.

McGee has also produced offensively through the early part of the season hitting .295 with 13 hits including four doubles and two home runs. He has also scored 14 times and tallied 13 RBI. McGee sits second on the team in walks with 16, home runs and on-base percentage (.508).

The watch list for the Bench Award will be updated to include other candidates through May 6 and will then be narrowed down to the semifinalists on May 16, 2013. Ballots will be sent to the national voting panel at the end of May for a vote to determine the three finalists. The finalists will be announced on June 4.

A final vote among the national committee will occur during the College World Series. All finalists will be brought to Wichita and the winner will be announced at the 15th Annual Greater Wichita Sports Banquet on June 27, 2013.
