No. 6 Florida State (31-6, 13-5 ACC) hits the road this weekend for the fourth time in ACC play this year as the Seminoles visit Charlottesville to face No. 8 Virginia (32-6, 13-5 ACC) beginning Friday, April 19 at 6 pm.
The Seminoles lead the all-time series 48-20 and have had success in Charlottesville with 16 wins in 24 trips. But UVa has won three of the last four games against the Noles on their home turf including consecutive series victories in 2009 & 2011. Prior to 2009, FSU had not dropped a series at UVa winning seven straight.
In 2012, Florida State swept Virginia at home as the ‘Noles used a pair of three-run eighth innings in games two and three to complete the come-from-behind wins. UVa got its revenge at the ACC Tournament shutting out FSU 7-0 during pool play in Greensboro.
Despite the regular sweep last year, Virginia has held the upper hand in the series as of late winning seven of the last 12 games including four straight wins over FSU at the ACC Tournament.
During the 2011 series in Charlottesville, all three games were decided in extra innings by one-run with UVa winning two of three. Virginia then defeated Florida State 7-2 in Durham to claim its second ACC championship.
In a series dating back to 1972, the Seminoles have dropped just three of 19 regular season series (15-3-1) against UVa with all three losses coming in three of the last four years (2009-2011). Of the 68 games played between the two schools, 32 have been decided by three runs or less including 19 (FSU 11-8) by only one-run. FSU is 20-12 in those three-run or less games. Eleven of the last 17 games in the series have been decided by three runs or less.
This weekend marks the 18th time since 2004 that both teams will face each other ranked in the top 25. Of the 17 prior meetings, seven times FSU & UVa have both been ranked in the top 10 - all since 2010. Virginia has won five of those seven games.
Florida State will turn to the same starting rotation for the third week in a row when RHP Luke Weaver will throw Friday, LHP Brandon Leibrandt on Saturday and RHP Scott Sitz on Sunday.
