No. 8 Florida State (35-9) jumps out of ACC play this weekend to host No. 30 UCF (26-19), out of Conference USA, for a three-game series in Tallahassee beginning Friday, May 3. All three games this weekend will air on ESPN3.
Both teams enter the weekend on a bit of a hot streak as the Seminoles have won four in a row and the Knights winners of their last six games. FSU has received quality starting pitching over that four-game win streak as the combination of Peter Miller, Luke Weaver, Brandon Leibrandt and Scott Sitz allowed just two runs in 26.0 innings of work.
The Seminoles are 19-1 against non-conference foes and 12-2 against schools from the state of Florida in 2013. The last five remaining out of conference games for the Noles this year will be against teams from the state of Florida (UCF and Stetson).
FSU owns a record of 23-5 all-time against UCF and 18-3 inside the friendly confines of Dick Howser Stadium. This weekend marks the third straight year these two schools have met during the regular season.
Prior to the 2011 series in Tallahassee, the two schools had not met during the regular season since March 10, 1993. The eight meetings between 1997 and 2004 all occurred in an NCAA Regional played in Tallahassee.
FSU and UCF last met in Tallahassee for a three-game series in 2011 as the Noles took 2-of-3 from the Knights winning games 1 & 3. The Seminoles outscored the Knights 24-15 during the weekend series.
Last year, FSU swept the two-game mid-week series from UCF in Orlando as both games were one-run victories for the Noles. In game one, FSU stormed back after being down four runs scoring all seven runs in the top of the sixth and then hung on for the victory. In game two, Jayce Boyd hit a fourth inning solo home run and Scott Sitz (5.0 scoreless) and three other pitchers combined for the five-hit shutout in a 1-0 victory.
Florida State will once again send out the same starting rotation for the weekend as RHP Luke Weaver will start Friday followed by LHP Brandon Leibrandt (Saturday) and RHP Scott Sitz (Sunday).
