Florida State's Peter Miller has decided to return for his senior season as the signing deadline for the 2013 MLB First Year Player Draft came to a close at 5:00 p.m. on Friday, July 12.
Miller has played an integral role in the success of the Florida State pitching staff over the last two seasons posting an 11-4 record and a 3.78 ERA in 100.0 innings of work. The right hander has tallied 84 strikeouts in 32 appearances which include 23 starts during that span.
"We are ecstatic that Peter Miller will be returning to Florida State for his senior year," said head coach Mike Martin. "He had a fantastic junior season and was a major contributor to our overall success this past spring. We are even more excited to have him back on the mound for us in 2014."
In 2013, Miller posted single-season career-highs for wins (6), innings pitched (58.1), starts (13) and strikeouts (47). He worked a career-high 7.0 shutout innings in a win at Jacksonville, while striking out a career-best eight hitters in 5.1 innings against Villanova.
Miller put together a streak of 19.0 scoreless inning over four starts in 2013 blanking USF (6.0 IP), Villanova (5.1 IP), Boston College (5.2 IP) and Maryland (2.0 IP). He then tossed back-to-back shutout victories over South Alabama (6.2 IP) and Jacksonville (7.0 IP) allowing a combined five hits and two walks while striking out 10.
"It was a tough decision to turn down playing professional baseball," said Miller. "It is something that I have always wanted to do my whole life. But when you look at the team we have coming back for next year, we have a great shot at winning the World Series. I have been here three years and this team (in 2014) has the look of being a championship contending team. We just need to put the pieces together. We have a great coaching staff and great players, so it is going to be an exciting year. I am definitely pumped to be coming back."
Pursuing a degree in criminology with a minor in psychology, Miller is a two-time member of the ACC Academic Honor Roll and was named to the All-ACC Academic Team in 2012 and 2013.
Miller was selected with the 484th overall pick in the 16th round by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 2013 MLB Draft.
