Previewing FSU-Georgia Tech

Florida State must win in Atlanta to keep its tournament hopes alive.

Must-win is a term that is thrown around a lot in sports, but tonight's game against Georgia Tech is definitely a must-win for Florida State if they want to keep their already slim hopes of making the NCAA Tournament alive. The Seminoles come in with a 16-11 overall record and a 7-8 record in ACC play. The Yellow Jackets are firmly out of any tournament hopes with a 13-15 overall record and are 4-11 in ACC play.

Georgia Tech has had a rough year on both ends of the court as they are allowing more points than they have scored this season. The Yellow Jackets are 285th in the nation in scoring offense and 88th in scoring defense. They shoot an abysmal .434 which is only good enough for 229th in the country. Georgia Tech has lost five of their last six games and currently sit 13th in the ACC out of 15 teams.

The Yellow Jackets have four players that average double-digit points this season. Senior guard Trae Golden and sophomore forward Marcus Georges-Hunt average over 12 points per game. Senior Center Daniel Miller and sophomore forward Robert Carter Jr. both average over 10 points and 7.5 rebounds per game. Handling Miller will be a tough task for the Seminole defense. Center Boris Bojanovsky has trouble with bigger centers and Miller definitely classifies as that standing 6-foot-11 and weighing 275 pounds. Michael Ojo might see more minutes than usual just due to the 60-pound difference between him and Bojanovsky.

Florida State will depend on seniors Ian Miller and Okaro White as well as sophomore Aaron Thomas to get the win tonight. Miller and Thomas have carried the team for the past month, and finally earned starting roles. White has been up and down lately, but is coming off a 22-point performance against Pittsburgh. Hamilton will look to get these three going early.

I expect Florida State to come away with a win here, but I do not think it will be easy. Georgia Tech has a very formidable front court and if the Seminoles get into foul trouble early the Yellow Jackets could find an advantage down low. Florida State wins 71-66.
