FSU Takes Miami Series

Florida State rode two big innings to a 13-6 win over Miami to take the rubber match and win the weekend series.

Florida State used two big innings to take the series with the 13-6 victory over rival Miami. The Seminoles improve to 8-1 on the season, while Miami falls to an even 5-5. Miami opened the game up with a run in the top of the second, but Florida State answered back with a vengeance. The Seminoles scored 6 in the 3rd inning to take a 6-1 lead. The Hurricanes fought back and eventually tied the game at 6 in the top of the 6th inning. Florida State exploded for 7 runs in the bottom half of the inning putting the game away for the Seminoles.

"It was just one of those innings where a lot of things went right for us," Head coach Mike Martin said. "A lot of things started happening for us and it just mushroomed."

Starting pitcher Mike Compton didn't have the best outing, but was effective and gave Florida State a chance to win. He went five innings and gave up three runs on six hits and two walks. He also added four strikeouts. Florida State got into a little trouble in the 6th and Miami was able to tie the game after reliever Billy Strode came in. Strode gave up two runs on two hits, but a fielding error by center fielder Ben DeLuzio set up the Hurricanes. Gage Smith came in and continued his excellent pitching getting Florida State out of the jam. Relief pitcher Bryant Holtmann came in for the 8th and recorded three strikeouts. Closer Jameis Winston pitched a 1-2-3 9th.

Florida State got production from every batter in the starting lineup. Second baseman John Sansone was the only Seminole starter not to get a hit, but he scored two runs in his two times on base and had an RBI. D.J. Stewart and Jose Brizuela both had three hits. This was Brizuela's second straight three hit game. 18 Seminole batters reached base on either a hit or a walk.

Florida State travels to South Florida for a midweek series starting Tuesday at 7 PM. The Bulls are currently 8-2 on the year.
