Florida State Takes Game One vs. Maryland

Florida State offense explodes late, Seminoles defeat Maryland 15-3.

Florida State used a late offensive explosion to get their eleventh win of the season 15-3 against Maryland. The Seminoles and Terrapins were locked into a pitchers' duel for most of the game. Florida State got their first run in the third inning after Ben DeLuzio scored on a Justin Gonzalez single and a Maryland throwing error. Maryland responded with a two run home run by third baseman Jose Cuas to take a 2-1 lead. The Seminoles snatched that right back after a Maryland wild pitch brought home DeLuzio.

The game was extremely tight until the bottom of the seventh inning when Florida State was able to blow the game wide open. The Seminoles scored 6 runs on four hits, two HBPs, and a walk capped off by a bases clearing stand up triple by center fielder Ben DeLuzio which pushed the score to 8-2. Florida State would add another 7 runs in the eighth inning on four hits, three walks and a HBP to give the Seminoles a 15-2 lead. Maryland was able to score a run in the top of the ninth, but the Terrapins couldn't muster the miracle rally they would have needed to come back.

Luke Weaver is the winning pitcher for Florida State. He went seven innings while giving up only four hits and two earned runs while striking out a season high eight batters. Weaver improves to 3-1 on the season. Billy Strode came in to pitch a scoreless eighth inning and Taylor Blatch came in for the ninth to finish up the game.

Florida State finished with fifteen runs on twelve hits and seven walks. The Seminole hitters accounted for thirteen RBIs while only leaving eight on base. D.J. Stewart and DeLuzio both had three RBIs.

Florida State improves to 11-1 on the season and are 1-0 in ACC play. Maryland falls to 8-3 and 0-1 in the ACC. They will play again on Saturday at 2 PM. Brandon Liebrandt will get the start for Florida State.
