D.J. Stewart breaks record in 7-1 Seminoles Victory.
It looked like DJ Stewarts incredible streak of reaching base was going to end at 57 when he grounded out to short in the eighth inning, but Florida State was able to bring him up again in the top of the ninth. Stewart took advantage of the extra at bat with a two-RBI single. With that hit Stewart passed Shane Robinson for the most games consecutively reaching base in school history. Luke Weaver threw a complete game three hit, one run game on Friday night which propelled the Seminoles to a 7-1 victory. Jose Brizuela had three hits and John Nogowski had two RBIs on two hits.
Mike Martin hits landmark.
It took 13 innings on Saturday but Florida State was able to pull out a 4-3 victory to clinch the series. With the win head coach Mike Martin Sr. became the third coach in Division 1 college baseball history to win 1800 games along with Augie Garrido of Texas/Cal State Fullerton and Gene Stephenson of Wichita State. The Seminoles took a 3-0 in the top of the fourth, but the Demon Deacons were able to battle back with runs in the fifth, sixth, and seventh innings. Jameis Winston came into the game in the top of the ninth with a runner on third and one out. Winston managed to get out of the inning and pitched 4.2 innings of scoreless baseball on the way to getting his first win of the year. Danny De La Calle had the game winning RBI in the top of the 13th inning as he singled in Sansone from second. Senior Captain Justin Gonzalez struggled mightily at the plate as he struck out four of the seven times he entered the batter's box. He did manage two walk twice. DJ Stewart reached base three times on two hits and a walk to extend his streak to 59.
Seminoles fall short of sweep
Florida State was able to take a 2-0 lead in the second inning after RBIs by Justin Gonzalez and Danny De La Calle. De La Calle had a strong weekend with six hits and three RBIs. The Seminoles were unable to hold the lead as Wake scored two runs in the fourth, one in the eight, and two more in the ninth. Peter Miller took the loss as he gave up one run in two innings. Gage Smith, uncharacteristically, gave up two more runs in the ninth and Wake avoided the series sweep with a 5-2 win. DJ Stewart increased his on base streak to 60 with a hit and a walk.
At the end of the weekend Florida State improves to 30-9 and 16-5 in the ACC. Wake Forest is now 25-17 and 12-9 in ACC Play. Florida State will play two mid-week games at home versus Stetson before welcoming the No. 1 team in the country, Virginia, to Tallahassee next weekend.
