Florida State Shuts Out Duke

Florida State shut down Duke as the Seminoles reached 40 wins for the 37th straight season.

Florida State beat Duke 3-0 on Friday night and reached 40 wins for the 37th straight season. Luke Weaver threw seven scoreless innings while striking out four and giving up five hits. The Seminoles improved to 20-8 in ACC play and reached 20 ACC wins for the seventh time since coming into the league.

Head coach Mike Martin praised his players for the record:

"I am very thankful and appreciative to have coached at Florida State during this time. That is an accomplishment which the players deserve all the credit for the dedication and hard work they put in. It's hard to do that and our team deserves a lot of credit. We played a tough schedule."

Casey Smit also talked about what it means to uphold that record:

"It says we compete. We are a great program and we have a lot of talent that continues to come through here and will continue to come through here for years. We're a very big team in the college baseball world and it's nice to see us compete and win every year and be successful. You come here expecting to win. You come here expecting to work your butt off for this moment. No one likes to lose, especially nobody on our team. Anything we can do to win a game and keep our season going is what we are going to do. We're going to fight and we're not going to give up until the last out.

Florida State was able to get on the board with three runs in the third inning thanks to RBI singles from Danny De La Calle and Casey Smit. D.J. Stewart added an RBI groundout to put the Seminoles up 3-0. That was all they would need with the excellent outing from the Florida State pitching staff. In addition to Weaver's exceptional outing Gage Smith and Jameis Winston came in and threw scoreless eighth and ninth innings to seal the seventh shutout of the season for the Seminoles. Winston picked up his sixth save of the season.

Florida State and Duke play again on Friday at 6 PM. Mike Compton is the expected starting pitcher.
