Noles Hold on for 9-8 Win over Duke

Florida State holds off Duke's ninth inning rally to clinch the series with a 9-8 win.

Going into the top of the ninth Florida State was up 9-3. Brandon Johnson then gave up 4 runs, 2 earned, but would have been able to end the game if not for an error by second baseman John Sansone. Jameis Winston replaced Johnson and balked a runner over before getting a grounder to first and he was unable to get his foot on the bag and the game continued. The next batter doubled down the left field line but great relay throws would have thrown out the runner at the plate if De La Calle had been able to hold on to the ball. With that the Blue Devils had pulled within one. With the tying run on second and the winning run at the plate Head coach Mike Martin went to the Bullpen once more and brought out Dylan Silva. Silva got a very deep fly ball but in the end Ben DeLuzio was able to get under it for the last out of the game.

Starting pitcher Mike Compton gets the win going 5.1 innings and giving up 2 earned runs. Dylan Silva got the first save of his career. The Seminoles jumped out to a 5-3 before exploding for 4 runs in the seventh inning. D.J. Stewart, Jose Brizuela, Josh Delph, and Ben Deluzio led the way for the Seminoles offensively. Stewart went 4-4 and reached base five times to go with three RBIs. Brizuela went 3-4 with two RBIs and three stolen bases. Delph and Deluzio both had two hits and a combined three RBIs.

Florida State improved to 41-13 and 21-8 in the ACC. With Miami's comeback win over North Carolina the Seminoles are locked into the No. 2 seed in next week's ACC tournament. Florida State and Duke will close out their series at 1 PM on Saturday.
