Barnett Hits The Road

Dorchester (SC) defensive end Michael Barnett is wrapping up a trip to Florida State, but he will not be home for long after he returns from the home of the defending champs.

Recruiting against Florida State has always been difficult. Recruiting against the Seminoles when they are coming off a national championship is even tougher.

Michael Barnett, a four-star defensive end from Dorchester (SC) Woodland High School, had good things to say about what he had seen, heard and experienced at FSU. Barnett was in the process of trying to decide whether he would get on the field and work out before leaving town.

"I've just been looking at the camp so far," he stated. "I've watched them. I may work out. I'm not too sure right now. I like it pretty good down here.

"Really I can't complain. I've talked to Coach Graham (running backs coach/special teams coordinator) and Coach Sal (head coach of defense/defensive ends coach). I've talked to Coach Fisher once since I've been down. I've been enjoying myself."

Florida State has been one of Barnett's top schools for a long time and at least since he decommitted from Virginia Tech after signing day.

So has NC State.

Barnett is very open to the prospect of leaving South Carolina, and NC State sensed that early. The coaches have spoken to him about visiting, and Barnett has taken them up on that plenty of times.

"I think I'm going to NC State again next weekend just for a visit," he said. "I've been there a good five, six times."

This time Barnett will not be going for himself. He has seen just about everything he needs to see as far as what the school has to offer athletically and academically. He knows about the dorms, the stadium, and the facilities. He has met all the coaches, has a good feel for their personalities and even has a good idea of when he might be able to get on the field.

No – this trip isn't for him.

"I'm going up there so I can have my mom see the campus," he stated. "She hasn't been there, but I've told her about it. She's just going to be looking at how the coaches are. I'm her first born so she just wants them to treat me well. But pretty much every school has me there so that's nothing to worry about."

Barnett added that Wolfpack recruiting coach Des Kitchings has sensed the importance of getting Barnett's mother on board, and he has spoken with her.

While her opinion is important she has not tried to influence him in the least.

"I think she's cool with wherever I go. I just want to visit some schools that I like with her so she can see what she thinks."

Barnett holds offers from NC State, Florida State, Clemson, Georgia, and South Carolina among others. He continues to maintain that he is wide open.
