The Oregon Ducks dominated the Seminoles 59-20 tonight. Florida State had their chances in the first half, but were able to come up with just 13 points in four redzone attempts in the first half. Still, the Seminoles were down just five going into half time. A position the team was quite familiar with.
The second half is where Florida State had been at its best all season. Tonight, however, it was a different story. Right out of halftime Florida State was driving to take the lead, but a Dalvin Cook fumble took the wind out of the Seminole sails. Five plays later Oregon was in the endzone taking a 12-point lead.
The Seminoles were able to cut the Oregon lead to 25-20 on a 10-play drive capped by a Travis Rudolph touchdown reception. Unfortunately for Florida State, the Ducks drove right back down the field extending the lead back to 12. The Seminoles looked to be on the march again, but a second Dalvin Cook fumble ended the drive. Oregon was quick to take advantage scoring on just two plays to make it a 19-point game.
Florida State would turn the ball over three more times, two fumbles and an interception, with Oregon scoring touchdowns at every turn to put the Ducks up 59-20. Florida State put the backups in and that was how the game ended.
Florida State quarterback Jameis Winston played extremely well going 29-45 for 348 yards, 1 touchdown, and 1 interception. The interception was tipped by true freshman Travis Rudolph into the hands of an Oregon defender. The Seminoles were able to run the ball effectively with Dalvin Cook going for 103 and Karlos Williams adding 80 himself. Cook became the second 1000-yard rusher in as many seasons after not having any since Warrick Dunn in 1996.
The Seminole defense gave up a season high 639 yards. 338 passing and 301 rushing. Oregon running back Thomas Tyner averaged 9.5 yards per carry on his way to 124 yards and 2 touchdowns. Heisman Trophy winner Marcus Mariota was 26-36 for 338 yards, 2 touchdowns, and 1 interception. Mariota also added 62 yards and a touchdown on the ground.
Florida State’s season ends at 13-1 and the loss snaps a 29 game winning streak. Oregon moves to 13-1 and will face the winner of the Alabama-Ohio State semifinal game.
