Marquez White Stepping Up For FSU

Florida State has an opening at cornerback and junior Marquez White is trying to fill it.

With former Florida State cornerbacks Ronald Darby and P.J. Williams leaving for the NFL there has been intense competition between the defensive backs to earn those spots. Star defensive back Jalen Ramsey will be taking one of the positions, but the other is wide open. That won’t be the case if junior Marquez White has anything to say about it.

Head coach Jimbo Fisher has said that White has really impressed him the last two days.

“He’s flashed at me today,” Fisher said. “He made three of four really good plays that weren’t bad throws, weren’t bad routes, but he made good plays. He adlibbed and slid under a guy one time and batted a ball. The last two days Marquez has caught my eye.”

White has been working with the first team during practice and junior safety Nate Andrews said that has really helped him develop.

“I think he’s been doing good,” Andrews said. “This is his first year actually getting reps with the ones. He’s doing a lot of things good, still learning.”

Coach Fisher went on to say that White would be the starter if they had a game tomorrow.

“He would be,” Fisher said. “I think he’d have a great shot. He’s playing good football right night.”

White said that since he’s been able to work a full offseason he’s improved greatly.

“I know my technique is a lot better,” White said. “I’ve gotten a lot better in the weight room and that’s helped me so far. I’m just trying to challenge myself every day to get better at one specific thing each day.”

Senior safety Tyler Hunter believes that not playing basketball has really helped him.

“I feel like not playing basketball helped him out just with his technique and weight lifting,” Hunter said. “Being able to gain more weight and be stronger. That definitely helped him.”

Hunter went on to say that White has been gaining confidence since the start of spring practice and that it’s showing in his play.

I’ve seen him be more confident from day one to today,” Hunter said. “He’s just been getting better at his technique and working on what he needs to do. I can tell from being out there he’s making plays and he’s more confident than he was.”

White said that Jalen Ramsey has been helping him out on the field and in the film room.

“He’s staying on me and just telling me certain stuff I need to focus on,” White said. “We watch film together and he tells me stuff I do wrong. He has the best technique out of all the corners so I study his film too.”

If White can keep improving during the spring and summer it’s going to be very hard for anyone else to win that job.
