Florida State falls to FGCU 5-0

The Florida State defense put the team in another early hole that they were unable to climb out of.

Florida State fell to Florida Gulf Coast 5-0 on Wednesday after head coach Mike Martin gives multiple starters the day off. Star left fielder D.J. Stewart got sick right before first pitch and was scratched from the lineup. Catcher Danny De La Calle were given the night off while Quincy Neiporte was in the DH role rather than at first.

The Seminoles had planned to pitch by committee today with no one going longer than three innings. Starter Jim Voyles only lasted 2.1 innings while giving up 3 runs, 2 earned, on 6 hits and a walk with 2 strikeouts.

The Florida State defense didn’t do much to help out the pitching staff posting three errors in the first three innings. Alex Deise came in for Voyles and gave up one run after Taylor Folsom and then Dylan Silva replaced him. Silva came in with the bases loaded and walked in a run. Another run scored on the passed ball to make it 5-0.

The Seminole hitters had trouble all day long, but loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh. Taylor Walls singled to start the inning, but the next two Florida State hitters flew out. Gage West doubled to right putting runners on second and third before Josh Delph walked to load the bases. John Sansone ran the count full before flying out to left and the Noles came away empty handed.

Florida State would put the first two on in the ninth, but couldn’t get anything else going. The Seminoles fall to 26-9 on the season. The will travel to Notre Dame this weekend.
