The morning session of day two of the Jimbo Fisher Camp is over and there were quite a few standouts on both sides of the football. Corey Bender and I break down the Top-5.
1. 2017 4-star WR D.J. Matthews
Once again D J Matthews was the top player on the field. His routes were perfect and he embarrassed more than one corner. His attitude is exactly what you want in a star receiver and his ability more than backs it up. He was the top wide receiver again and Florida State receiver George Campbell was getting after the defensive coaches saying they didn’t have anyone that can stop him.
2. 2017 4-star CB Jamyest Williams
Williams was up there as the top defensive back of the day and although he’s a bit on the short side he plays like he’s 6-foot-5 and his hair is on fire. He’s extremely quick and picked off a few passes by identifying the route and jumping it. He has very good make up speed and caught a few of the quarterbacks off guard with how quickly he could close on the ball.
3. 2017 4-star CB Stanford Samuels III
Samuels will be in consideration as the top cornerback in the country for 2017 and showed why with his performance this morning. He was right there with Williams for the top defensive back of the day. He’s already 6-foot-2 and uses his length very well. He understands the game and uses that knowledge to his advantage.
4. 2017 4-star S Cyrus Fagan
Fagan did much better than I expected in one on ones at the corner position, but really shined when they moved into the 7-on-7 drills. He jumped a few routes and made some plays. He has the size and athleticism to be one of the top safeties in the 2017 class.
5. 2018 RB Lorenzo Lingard
Lingard made the list for the second straight day. He has a great frame and burst. He was very good during the drills and caught the ball very well out of the backfield. He will need to put on a little weight, but the potential is there for him to be one of the top running backs in the 2018 class.
Right on the Edge
2016 4-star G Richard Merritt
Merritt was easily the best offensive lineman at the camp today. He does a great job with his hands and moves very well for a man that size.
2018 DE Xavier Thomas
Thomas already has the frame of an elite defensive end and he performed very well at camp today. He may end up the top defensive end in the 2018 class.
