Florida State came into the 2015 season with one lockdown cornerback already in place. Junior Jalen Ramsey has been one of the most highly regarded defensive backs in college football for the last three years, and when he made the move from the star position to corner, everyone expected a smooth transition.
The real question was how well junior cornerback Marquez White would play. White has stepped up to the plate, and has been just as good, if not better, than Ramsey this season. Florida State head coach Jimbo Fisher has been extremely pleased with the way White has played this season.
"Marquez is huge," Fisher said. "He's playing really well right now. I think he's had an outstanding year. We speak of Jalen [Ramsey] so much, who is having a great year. Marquez is a very talented ball skill guy that can cover and run. He's like we thought. He's developing into the player we really thought he could be. Very happy."
Ramsey couldn't be happier for his counterpart, and says that that's something that they talked about when they came in together.
"I’m just so proud of him because I know how far he’s come," Ramsey said. "I know how hard he’s worked, especially this off season. We came in together. This was something that we always talked about together. In my freshman year like, ‘It’s going to be me and you out there one day.’ We’re just living out our dream of playing big time college football together. He’s locking down one side. I’m locking down the other side. It’s a blessing to play with him."
So just how well does he think Marquez has played this year?
"I think we’re the best cornerback duo in the country," Ramsey said. "Marquez has held up his part and more. That’s fine if y’all don’t want to go to me. Go to Quez. He’s going to do the same thing."
Florida State will have their toughest challenge yet as they go up against a very talented Clemson secondary. White has exactly the type of mentality that you want a lockdown corner to have.
"For them to challenge me," White said. "I’m looking forward to the challenge. Just step up and make plays. I know I can play. The coaches know I can play. My teammates know I can play. Just accept the challenge. I’m really, really looking forward to this."
If they are the best cornerback duo in the country, this will be the game to prove it.
