Florida State Senior Spotlight: Giorgio Newberry

A final look at senior defensive tackle Giorgio Newberry.

Giorgio Newberry is a redshirt senior defensive tackle from Fort Pierce Central High School in Fort Pierce, Florida. Newberry was rated as the No. 146 prospect overall by Scout in 2011, and the No. 18 defensive end. Newberry has had a tumultuous career at Florida State playing three different positions including one on offense.

Newberry redshirted his first year at Florida State in 2011, and played in 12 games as a redshirt freshman in 2012 at defensive end. He finished that season with 13 tackles.

Newberry made the move to defensive tackle in the spring of 2013, but by the time the season started he was playing on the offensive side of the ball at tight end. He played in all 14 games that season as a backup tight end, but did not record a catch.

Newberry moved back to the other side of the ball in the spring of 2014. He went back to defensive tackle and played in all 14 games that season, but recorded just two tackles.

Everyone had pretty much given up on Newberry coming into the 2015 season, but the addition of defensive ends coach Brad Lawing lit a fire under Newberry. Through the first 10 games of this season Newberry has 19 tackles, 3 tackles for loss, 2 sacks, 4 pass breakups, and 3 fumble recoveries. He has won the Florida State defensive player of the week award multiple times this season, and has been a key player on a rejuvinated Florida State defense.
