Florida State Senior Spotlight: Derrick Mitchell Jr.

A final look at redshirt senior defensive tackle Derrick Mitchell Jr.

Derrick Mitchell Jr. is a redshirt senior defensive tackle from First Coast High School in Jacksonville, Florida. Mitchell was rated as a 3-star defensive tackle by Scout and the No. 4 defensive tackle in the state of Florida.

Mitchell redshirted his first year in 2011, and missed his redshirt freshman season with a back injury. Mitchell played in 8 games in 2013 and finished the year with 7 tackles, 1 sack and 1 tackle for loss.

He was thrown into a starting role in 2014, starting 10 games after an injury to Nile Lawrence-Stample. He finished the year with 20 tackles, 1 sack, and one fumble recovery.

Mitchell's redshirt senior season hasn't gone how he had planned. Injuries have caught up with him, and he's played sparingly this season. With three games left in the season he has 6 tackles, 2 quarterback hurries, and 1 pass breakup.

Mitchell has been a valuable member of the team at Florida State throughout his career, and one of the top academic performers on the team.
