Florida State opened the season with a 19-1 victory over Rhode Island. The Seminoles started things off quickly in the first scoring two runs. The first run came on a suicide squeeze by freshman clean up hitter Cal Raleigh to score Ben DeLuzio. Dylan Busby then drove in Matt Henderson with a single to left.
The Seminoles would break open the game with three runs in the fourth inning. John Sansone drew a bases loaded walk and then Cal Raleigh grounded into a fielder's choice, but a throwing error allowed two runs to score.
Mike Compton struggled a bit to start the game, but recovered to get out of the first. He cruised through the next three innings before giving up a solo homerun off the left field scoreboard to Mike Foley. Compton went 5 innings and gave up 1 run with 3 hits, 2 strikeouts, and 1 walk. He improves to 1-0 on the season.
Florida State didn't take kindly to Rhode Island getting on the board and threw up 10 runs in the bottom of the fifth. Gage West led the charge with a 2-run home run and a 2-RBI double after the Seminoles batted around.
The Seminoles would add one run in the seventh inning on a Sansone RBI single, and added another run in
Gage West finished the game 3-3 with five RBIs and 1 walk. Sansone and Raleigh both added 3 RBIs and Busby and Henderson added 2. DeLuzio went 3-4 on the night and scored 3 runs.
Alec Byrd, Jim Voyles, Ed Voyles, and Chase Haney all pitched a scoreless inning in relief.
Rhode Island committed 6 errors on the night.
Florida State improves to 1-0 and will play Rhode Island again at 2 PM on Saturday.
