Florida State pulled out an 11-10 extra innings win against Villanova on Wednesday night. Will Zirzow was the winning pitcher for the Seminoles.
Florida State got the scoring started early with three runs in the first. The Seminole offense would keep it going for most of the game with a run in the second, two in the third, and one in the fourth. The Seminoles would get one more run in the seventh.
Unfortunately the Seminoles pitching staff was having just as much trouble as the Villanova pitching staff. Starter Cobi Johnson gave up 5 runs in 3 innings. Seven different Florida State pitchers were used in the game. The only other pitchers to give up earned runs were Alec Byrd, who gave up 1 earned run in 2 innings, and Ed Voyles, who gave up 1 earned run in 3 innings.
Florida State squandered bases loaded opportunities in the eighth and tenth innings with the game tied at 8, and things were looking bleak after Villanova broke through with two runs in the thirteenth. The Seminoles loaded the bases once again, but this time senior John Sansone came through with a 2-RBI double to send the game to the 14th.
Florida State put runners on the corners with one out for freshman Cal Raleigh in the 14th. Raleigh, the normal starting catcher, was getting a day off, but was forced into duty. He came through in a big way with the game winning sacrifice fly to win the game.
John Sansone, Ben DeLuzio, and Bryan Bussey all came through with multiple RBIs. Fifteen different Florida State players batted.
Florida State improved to 6-2 on the season. The Seminoles will start a three game series at home against St. Johns on Friday at 6 PM.
