'Noles Open Practice
It was a typical first day," said head coach Bobby Bowden. "We did what had done in the past. The only difference this year is you have the freshmen in here with the upperclassmen on the first day."
Coach Bowden announced one position change as former defensive lineman Brian Ross will move to center when he returns from a fractured leg. Bowden also announced that second team center Andrew Henry-Kennon will miss the first game for a violation of team policy. True freshmen John Frady is working at center behind starter David Castillo.
The Seminoles will be led by a defense that returns 10 players that started in the Sugar Bowl. Seniors linebackers Kendyll Pope and Michael Boulware anchor the defense and are coming off 131 and 127-tackle seasons, respectively. Both are expected to contend for postseason honors.
"It was good to get back to practice and have everybody out there," said Pope. "I thought everything went well today, as good as you could expect for the first day. Right now you are just to get everybody on the same page. Once you get through the first couple of practices and get back into the routine it's all downhill."
The Seminoles welcomed senior tailback Greg Jones back to practice for the first time since he tore his ACL last season against Wake Forest (November 2nd). In nine games a year ago, Jones led the ACC with an average of 104.2 yards rushing per game. Jones went through the full practice with no discomfort and said he felt like he was back to full speed.
Florida State will return to practice Thursday morning at 8:30 a.m. Media/fan day is scheduled for Sunday and the team will hold its first two-a-day practice on Monday.
