With 30 of the NFL teams represented, and the general manager, head coach, and defensive coordinator of the Tennessee Titans in attendance, Florida State defensive back Jalen Ramsey showed once again why he is considered one of the top players overall in the 2016 NFL draft class. He didn't take part in the combine drills because of how well he performed at the NFL combine, but did take part in position drills.
"I don’t think there is anything that I wasn’t able to show at the combine,” Ramsey said. “I was able to stand on my combine performance. I didn’t have to do any combine drills here. Today I took it as another opportunity to show why I’m the best player and the best DB in this year’s draft. That’s all I took it as. Just controlling everything that I can control. Just coming out here and doing great in my drills, and I think I did pretty good.”
As for what makes Ramsey so special, he wasn't shy about his assessment of himself.
“I think all of my traits are equally a reason for that success,” Ramsey said. “I’m big. I’m strong. I’m fast. I have good hips. I have good footwork. I’m always trying to perfect my craft, and at the end of the day, I’m just a competitor. I’m a winner. That’s something I like to do so wherever you put me I’m going to compete and I’m going to win.
Ramsey's performance didn't come as a surprise to Florida State head coach Jimbo Fisher, who has seen Ramsey do this for the last three years.
“That’s what I saw from the first day,” Jimbo said. “He’s a guy that does these workouts every day. That wasn’t really pressure. That was just Jalen being Jalen. He’s just that special of a guy.”
There are some NFL Draft boards that have Ramsey rated as the top player in this draft, and when asked he agreed with that assessment.
“I’ve proven it,” Ramsey said. “I’ve had the resume for it. You can watch my game film. Wherever you want to put the spotlight on me. Wherever you want to try to put pressure on me. I’m a competitor. I’m a winner. That’s just what I do. I’m just going to control what I can control and I’ll always have my supporters behind my back. As long as I’m giving it my best I’ll be satisfied with myself.”
The Titans have the No. 1 pick in the 2016 NFL Draft, and with so many of the Titan's leadership in attendance they obviously believe that he's in that conversation. His performance today only helped to solidify that.
