No. 9 Florida State defeats Louisville 12-7 in the first of a three game series. Matthew Kinney improves to 3-0 on the season with the win.
Louisville got on the board first with an RBI single in the top of the first, and it looked like it could have been more if not for a heads up play by Dylan Busby to cut the throw home and gun down the runner at second.
The Cardinal came back with another run in the second on an RBI single to make it 2-0.
The Seminoles responded with a run in the third on a John Sansone RBI double to cut the lead to 2-1. The Seminoles could have had more in the inning, but multiple base running errors cost the Seminoles two outs.
Louisville answered right back with two more in the top of the fourth. An RBI single and a solo home run over the right field wall pushed the score to 4-1.
Starter Mike Compton was pulled for for Alec Byrd with no outs in the fourth. He gave up three runs, two earned, on eight hits with one walk and one strikeout.
Florida State showed their resiliency by coming back with two runs themselves in the bottom half of the inning. Matt Henderson came through with a 2-RBI single with the bases loaded to close the gap to 4-3.
Louisville pushed their lead back to two runs in the fifth with a solo home run to right by pitcher Brendan McKay.
The Seminoles fought right back, and tied the game with two runs in the bottom of the sixth. John Sansone grounded into a double play with the bases loaded, but Gage West scored on the play. Cal Raleigh singled in Henderson in the next at bat to make it 5-5.
Matthew Kinney came in for Byrd in the seventh inning. Byrd gave up two runs in three innings on three hits and one strikeout.
Once again Louisville bounced right back with two runs in the top of the seventh. A two run home run for Devin Hairston pushed the Louisville lead to 7-5.
Florida State threw their counter, and knockout, punch in the bottom half of the inning with seven runs. Gage West got things started with an RBI single. Taylor Walls tied the game with a sacrifice fly to right. John Sansone doubled down the third base line and brought in two runs to give the Seminoles their first lead of the game. Cal Raleigh followed him up with a monster two-run home run to right center. Hank Truluck finished the inning scoring on a throwing error by the third baseman. When the smoke cleared Florida State led 12-7.
Cobi Johnson pitched two scoreless innings to end the game.
The Seminoles move to 21-7 overall and 8-1 in the ACC. They will continue the series with Louisville on Saturday at 6 PM.
