Florida State will advance in the winner's bracket off the Tallahassee regional after defeating Southern Miss 7-2. Starter Tyler Holton picked up the win and improves to 3-3 on the season.
The game got off to a rough start for Holton. He walked the first batter of the game, gave up a hit, and then walked the bases loaded with no outs. Chase Scott got the Golden Eagles on the board with a sacrifice fly, and Hunter Slater drove in another with a 2-out RBI single. Holton got out of the inning, but Southern Miss held a 2-0 lead.
Florida State answered back in the bottom of the second inning, and it came from the most unlikely source. Right fielder Steven Wells Jr., who was hitting .188 at the time, obliterated a baseball off the top of the scoreboard in left for a 3-run home run to give the Seminoles a 3-2 lead.
The Seminoles added a run in the third on an RBI walk from Matt Henderson. Henderson came through again for the Seminoles with an RBI single in the fifth to make it 5-2 Seminoles.
After the rocky first inning, Holton settled down and cruised through the next four innings. From the second inning to the fifth inning he faced the minimum number of batters possible. He was relieved by Jim Voyles with 2 outs and 1 on in the sixth. He went 5.2 innings while giving up 2 runs on 3 hits with 2 walks and 6 strikeouts.
Florida State got some added insurance in the seventh inning when Jackson Lueck hit his third home run of the season. Lueck got just enough of it to get the ball over the wall in left center for a 2-run home run and a 7-2 Seminole lead.
Jim Voyles cruised through the next 2.1 innings. He threw just 16 pitches in that span. Voyles struggled to find control in the ninth and walked the first two batters on eight pitches, but a strikeout and a double play ended the game.
The Seminoles improve to 39-20 on the season, and are one win away from winning 40 games for the 39th straight year. They will await the winner of Southern Miss and South Alabama on Sunday, June 5th at 6 PM. The loser of that game will be eliminated.
