Wednesday Scrimmage Update

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The Florida State Seminoles held their first scrimmage of the preseason Wednesday afternoon at Doak Campbell Stadium. The scrimmage was nearly completed when lightning forced the coaches to call the team in. Junior wide receiver P.K. Sam led the way offensively with five catches for 101 yards and two touchdowns. The defense piled up 12 sacks with Darnell Dockett, Chauncey Davis and Willie Jones recording two apiece

"We'll go out and pick up where we left off tomorrow," said head coach Bobby Bowden. "We probably had about a quarter of it left. We'll practice and then finish it up. Like any scrimmage, there was some good and some bad. I though the effort was good."

Craphonso Thorpe (3-65 yards, 1 TD) and Chauncey Stovall (2-43 yards, 1 TD) followed Sam in the receiving stats. Fabian Walker completed 8-of-16 passes for 172 yards while Chris Rix went 5-for-11 for 78 yards. Walker and Rix threw two touchdown passes each. Leon Washington led all rushers with 67 yards on four carries.

"I thought the quarterbacks did well," said Bowden. "Chris made some plays by scrambling and Fabian had some nice deep passes. P.K. Sam has caught the ball well in practice and he had a couple of good catches today."

The defense recorded 19 tackles for loss, including a total of 12 sacks. Michael Boulware was the leading tackler with five stops and a sack. A total of nine Seminoles had sacks with Dockett, Davis and Jones combing for six of the 12. Sophomore Pat Watkins had several big plays as he tallied two tackles and three pass break-ups while also blocking a field goal attempt.

"Getting to the quarterback is an area we need to improve on," said Bowden. "We haven't had a whole lot of success doing that over the last couple of years. I really think that's an area where we'll be improved if we can stay healthy."

The team will work on the practice fields for about an hour Thursday morning and then move to Doak Campbell Stadium to finish the scrimmage.
