LA. Running Back Will Visit Noles

In August Florida State got some good news when Greensboro (NC) running back Jamaal Edwards gave a verbal commitment to the Noles. However, the Seminole coaching staff is still looking and recruiting a second running back for the class of 2004. Derron Thomas, a star running back from Reserve (LA) East Saint John, looks to be one of the targets.

"I have an offer from Florida State in writing," the 5-foot-11 and 190 pound running back with 4.43 40-yard dash speed said. "I have a total of 13 offers."

Some of the other schools that Thomas reports offers from are Michigan, LSU, Colorado, and Nebraska.

Thomas has plans to make several unofficial and official visits before deciding on where he'll play his college ball.

"Last week I visited LSU for the LSU/Georgia game," he said. "I'm also going to visit Florida State for the Miami game. I also plan on visiting Miami unofficially. Last year I visited Florida State when they played Florida."

The East State John senior student/athlete grew up a fan of Miami and his favorite player was Deon Sanders.

"Miami said they might offer me when I go down there on a visit," he said. "Right now my top five are Florida State, Michigan, Colorado, Nebraska and LSU."

So what does Thomas like about the Noles?

"They look like they have a good team this year," he said. "I like their offense and they way they use their running backs."

Thomas, who is on track to fully qualify with a 3.5 grade point average, compares his style to another Louisiana native.

"I would say my style of play is a lot like Marshall Faulk," he said. ""I have good speed and vision. I also have good cut-back ability."

Through three games, Thomas has rushed for 345 yards on 38 carries and six touchdowns. He has also caught 13 passes for 180 yards.
